Completing the 3D Illusion: Beyond the Collar

While the 'neck joint' is the most well-known aspect of invisible mannequin editing, true high-end e-commerce photography requires a complete 360-degree 3D illusion. This is where bottom jointing and sleeve jointing come into play. When photographing wide-leg trousers, flared skirts, long coats, or wide-sleeved garments on a mannequin, the inside back of the hem or sleeve is often visible. Simply leaving the mannequin legs or arms in the shot destroys the illusion, but cutting them out leaves a flat, unnatural void. Bottom and sleeve jointing is the meticulous process of reconstructing these internal hollow spaces.

What is Bottom Jointing?

Bottom jointing applies the exact same principles as neck jointing, but to the lower hem of a garment. For a flared dress, a long trench coat, or wide-leg palazzo pants, the front hem naturally hangs open, revealing the inside back lining of the garment (and usually the mannequin's legs). We require a secondary photograph showing this inside back hem. Our retouchers remove the mannequin legs and seamlessly stitch the inner hem shot into the hollow space. We add realistic internal shadows, creating the perfect illusion that an invisible person is wearing the garment and you are looking through the open hem.

What is Sleeve Jointing?

Sleeve jointing is crucial for garments with wide, flared, or bell sleeves, as well as shorts with wide leg openings. When the mannequin's arms or legs are removed, the inside of the sleeve or leg opening must be reconstructed. We use secondary shots of the inner cuffs to build a realistic, hollow, 3D tube. We pay special attention to the lighting, ensuring the inside of the sleeve falls into a natural shadow, perfectly matching the depth of the garment.

The Technical Challenges We Solve

Bottom and sleeve jointing are often more difficult than neck jointing because the areas involved are larger, more fluid, and heavily reliant on drape rather than structure.

1. Matching Drape and Flow

The inner hem of a flared skirt must naturally follow the wave and flow of the front hem. Our senior retouchers use advanced warping and Liquify techniques to ensure the stitched inner lining moves logically with the rest of the garment, avoiding any stiff or unnatural lines.

2. Complex Hem Alignments

High-low dresses, asymmetrical skirts, and split-hem trousers require incredibly precise alignment. We ensure that the reconstructed inner hem perfectly matches the complex geometry of the front garment, maintaining the designer's intended silhouette.

3. Deep Shadow Reconstruction

The inside of a long coat or a wide sleeve is naturally dark. Creating believable shadows is critical to the illusion. We manually paint deep, graduated shadows into the jointed areas, ensuring the hollow space looks genuinely three-dimensional and correctly lit based on the studio lighting of the original photograph.

Elevating Premium Fashion Imagery

In the luxury fashion market, every detail matters. Ignoring the bottom or sleeve joints results in an unfinished, amateur look. By investing in complete 360-degree ghost mannequin reconstruction, you provide your customers with a flawless, immersive visual experience. They can see the full volume of the skirt, the drape of the wide-leg pants, and the precise cut of the sleeves, drastically increasing their confidence in the product's quality and fit.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I photograph a garment for bottom jointing?

Shoot the main image normally on the mannequin. Then, take a secondary shot where you lift or pin back the front hem of the skirt or coat, clearly revealing the inside back lining and hem. We will combine these shots.

Do I need sleeve jointing for regular t-shirts?

Usually, no. For standard t-shirts or fitted long sleeves, the arm opening is small and often shadowed, so simple background removal is sufficient. Sleeve jointing is only required for wide, flared, or bell sleeves where the inside is clearly visible.

Does bottom jointing cost extra?

Because bottom and sleeve jointing require processing additional images and complex manual stitching, garments requiring these services (like complex dresses or wide-leg pants) generally fall into a higher complexity pricing tier than a standard t-shirt.
