If you sell clothing on Shopify, your product images are your single most important conversion tool. Getting your ghost mannequin photos technically correct for Shopify's platform is non-negotiable.
Here is the complete, up-to-date specification guide.
Shopify's Official Image Requirements (2026)
| Specification | Shopify Requirement | Our Recommendation | |---|---|---| | Format | JPG, PNG, GIF, WebP | JPG for solid backgrounds, PNG for transparent | | Max File Size | 20 MB | Under 500 KB for web speed | | Recommended Size | 2048 x 2048 px | 2000 x 2500 px (portrait crops better) | | Minimum Size | 800 x 800 px | Never go below this | | Color Profile | sRGB | Always sRGB for web | | Aspect Ratio | Square (1:1) default | We recommend 4:5 portrait |
Why We Recommend 4:5 Portrait (Not Square)
Shopify's default theme uses square images, but 4:5 portrait images (2000 x 2500 px) give you significantly more screen real estate, especially on mobile. Since 70%+ of fashion ecommerce traffic is now mobile, portrait images that fill the screen perform better.
Most Shopify themes support non-square images. Check your theme's documentation, or switch to Dawn, Impulse, or Prestige which all handle portrait images beautifully.
Ghost Mannequin File Delivery Formats
Standard E-Commerce (JPG)
- White background:
#FFFFFFpure white — Shopify's algorithm performs better with true white backgrounds - Off-white/gray background: Only use if consistent with your brand aesthetic
- Compression: Save at JPEG quality 80–85. This balances quality and file size perfectly.
Premium/Transparent (PNG)
- If you want to showcase the garment on colored or textured website backgrounds, request PNG delivery with transparency.
- Warning: Transparent PNGs are significantly larger files. Ensure your Shopify theme is configured for speed with lazy loading enabled.
File Naming Convention for Shopify SEO
Google and Shopify both read image file names for SEO context. Name your files descriptively:
Bad: IMG_0042.jpg
Good: mens-black-leather-jacket-ghost-mannequin-front.jpg
When we deliver your edited images, we can name them according to your SKU or naming convention upon request.
Bulk Image Optimization for Shopify
For brands uploading hundreds of products, we recommend:
- TinyPNG or Squoosh for batch compression after we deliver the edits
- Shopify's built-in image compression (enabled automatically for most themes)
- Cloudflare Images if you are on a high-traffic Shopify Plus store
